Face masks anyone??

Filed under: Uncategorized — plaineccentric @ 3:48 am

My friend sent me a txt asking if i’d like to share with her to buy a box of N95 face masks.  MYR60 for a box of 20 pcs. I wouldnt say it’s expensive, but then being disposables they’re not cheap either! What niggles me is that at that price, is the N95 effective in protecting the wearer against the swine flu.

I did a google search and found these…

CDC says (more info at http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/masks.htm ):

“…In community and home settings, the use of facemasks and respirators generally are not recommended.  However, for certain circumstances, a facemask or respirator may be considered, specifically for persons at increased risk of severe illness from influenza.

Use of N95 respirators or facemasks generally is not recommended for workers in non-healthcare occupational settings for general work activities…”

Naturalnews say (more info at http://www.naturalnews.com/026160.html ) :

“…N95 masks, you see, have but one purpose: To prevent the wearer from infecting others. To use blunt medical terminology, they work by preventing snot, spit or other virus-carrying particles from becoming airborne. Thus, if the wearer sneezes, coughs, drools, spits or talks excitedly, his or her infected fluids will be trapped in the mask and will not infect others.

N95 masks have virtually no ability to protect the wearer from other people’s airborne germs…”

So which mask should we get?

Well… i say :

Prevention is better than cure. So don’t think about the masks yet. What we should do is to avoid going to crowded places if we can. Minimise your risk of being exposed to the H1N1 swine flu.  Wash hands frequently. Try to avoid touching your mouth, nose and eyes.

On a lighter note, look at what cool masks i found!!  ;D
